Hadrian’s Wall – Lets Go Fishing

So lets go fishing today.

Fishing for interest in a little project that might just turn into a huge project and a whole lot of fun along the way.

You are of course all aware of this – www.hadrianswalk.org

Dans (from Allthatcomeswithit ) little walking project for next year ?

No ?

What blogs do you read then ?

A quick resume – Dan organised The Dales Way walk last year to raise funds for his friends charity The Joseph Salmon Trust, go and  read the JST web site, its heartbreaking and yet heart-warming all at the same time, give yourself a treat on a Monday morning, go on.

OK – read it now ?

You want to do something for them don’t you ?

Dan did his Dales Way Walk last year for them, he invited me, I accepted, then I chickened out with a good excuse, I made up the good excuse, he doesn’t know that so don’t let him know ok.

So,

Next year, July 2010, Dan has organised another long walk from Coast to Coast along Hadrians Wall, Newcastle to Carlisle and then a bit more, 84 miles in five days, he invited lots of people from the blogging world to join him and several dozen from all over the world have accepted his challenge, its going to be awesome and he’s going to raise a stash of money for the Joseph Salmon Trust.

And he invited me again, and I accepted again.

And then last week I mentioned something on his blog about there being a Hadrians Wall Cycle Route that runs very close to the Hadrians Wall hiking path, same distance, same stopovers …

…and one thing led to another, and he suggested that I might want to raise a cycling event at the same time as they are doing the walking event, it will save me having to walk the bloody thing,  so here it is…

HADRIANS  CYCLE EVENT
At the moment I just want to know if there is any interest, it’ll be during week commencing  July 5th  2010 to be synchronised with the two walking teams so that we all meet up on the evening of Weds 7th July at the village of Winshields, so at the moment I’m guessing that we would leave either Newcastle or Bowness on Solway (depending on which way we go) on the Tuesday morning – I’m thinking of a trip of three days – but thats flexible too, in fact we could start on the Thursday and meet the walkers as they finish at either of the ends – see what I mean, I have no idea of the itinerary at the moment, I’m just looking for interest.

The route is here www.hadrian-guide.co.uk it follows close to the ancient wall for those interested in old masonary (to be honest its an old bloody wall, what more can you say) and the guide says that its not as hilly as the C2C ride, well I don’t believe them, but if anyone wants a challenge and enjoys riding a bike rather than walking then simply let me know via the comments here, and don’t worry, I am no racing snake, I pedal very slowly, lycra is not required.

Because we’re sort of askew of Dans walking parties we should be able to organise two nights stopovers and it is also possible to hire bikes from either end although again, lets leave that one unanswered for the time being, we’ll look at the detail later – all I need to know now is if anyone is interested…

  1. Aha! I knew that was a made up excuse!

I am going to plug this heavily over at my site too, although I vaguely suspect that I’ve exhausted my own supply of mugs willing participants. Still, you never know.

  2. I had an emergency wisdom tooth extraction today now blindingly delirious on excess alcohol & industrial-strength painkillers bike ride 2010 count me in oh no more pain thank God I don’t fully appreciate what I’m agreeing to

  3. Excellent, and most of the others have volunteered, Andy is wavering as he claims to be more of a “mountains and wilderness man” – pah !

Anyone would think he’d climbed Everest or something

  4. Excellent news Gary! I look forward to it. By the way is sponsorship still open for the coast to coast as I forgot to sponsor you and said that I would?
